If a little slice of Old Ireland is what you are looking for, you’ve found it!

We live in a delightful 300-year-old stone farm house nestled in the rolling East Cork countryside and surrounded by working family farms. The house was thoughtfully restored 15 years ago by a British artist and her Irish husband. Original stone barns sit out back, home to our free range chickens. The front garden, with its canopy of tall trees, is a perfect spot for lazing away a warm day in the hammock. The quiet laneway outside our door is lined with rich hedgerow (that’s where I wild harvest many medicinal plants, as well as yummy blackberries!), and the stunning scenery offers relaxing strolls. Our gardens vary in elevation and are lined with original rock walls. The back garden is home to a neolithic standing stone; a daily reminder that this land has been cherished by many before us.

Our guest room is available for you most times of the year (unless we have friends or family visiting). It is a cozy size; with sloping ceiling, double bed and deep floor-level windows that welcome the rising sun (I love to sit in them, nestled in with a book). We share the bathroom, which has a tub with an electric shower installed. The window in the bathroom faces west and is a wonderful place to soak, in the evening, as the sun sets! The sitting room has a toasty wood burning stove, though we often burn turf because I love the smell! (the house also has central heating) TV is a rare thing for us but we have a nice collection of DVD’s available and, while the majority of my library is still in storage, there are books for you to enjoy, with some choice nuggets on Irish myth, history, archeology, and folklore.

I am thrilled to share our home! When I discovered AirBnB I knew I had to list our spare room. This is exactly the sort of location and experience I would have wished for during my years of visiting Ireland as a tourist. I appreciate AirBnB for creating this global community! It’s a beautiful thing to visit a country and truly experience how the people live.

*Please do note that the house would not easily accommodate mobility challenges as there are stairs to the bedroom, and you must climb into the tub in order to shower.*

Location:

The house is an easy 10 minute drive to Midleton, where you will find Ireland’s first (and still one of the best) farmer’s market every Saturday (Darina Allen’s Ballymaloe Cookery School has a stall and this market is where we do our weekly shop). Also in Midelton are the Jameson distillery, some lively pubs, great restaurants, plenty of shops, and the train in to Cork city! (why fight traffic and worry over parking when you can take the train?)

Other nearby attractions are the Fota Wildlife Park and Barryscourt Castle. (see my Guidebook for additional ideas)

The house is a great base for exploring East Cork, Waterford, and Tipperary! In fact, even the stunning Killarney National Park (in Kerry) is only a short one hour drive away! A lovely beach, with sea caves and peaceful sandy walks, is a 20 minute drive.

Our local (the local pub, that is) is a handy 2km walk down our laneway. Live music is on offer every Friday, and on the road there every Sunday you will find one of Ireland’s heritage sports still being played by men and women alike: Road Bowling! In fact, this area hosts one of the All Ireland Championships every year!

-We are located in a rural area. If you have a car this is a great base for touring. If you do not, it’s a lovely location for quiet time reading, making art, taking long walks, cuddling in the sitting room, and generally relaxing.-
